FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is Tether?
Tether collects what your customers say, wherever they say it, and turns it into a ranked list of their pain points, each backed by their own words. It's built for solo founders and small teams deciding what to build next.
Who is Tether not for?
Product and research teams that need shared workspaces, roles and a research repository. Tether has one account per founder and no team features, so Dovetail or Productboard will suit a team like that better.
How much does Tether cost?
Tether is free while it's in early access, and pricing isn't set yet. Each account has a monthly allowance for AI analysis. You can see how much you've used and ask for more in the app, and feedback is always stored, even when the allowance runs out.
Where can feedback come from?
Call transcripts, Email, Forwarded emails and notifications, LinkedIn messages, Text messages, Slack channels, Product Hunt comments, Indie Hackers posts, Replies on X and Bluesky, YouTube comments. With Tether for Chrome, a quote can come from any web page too, such as Reddit, Hacker News or a review site.
Can I forward emails to Tether?
Yes. Each product has its own private address, shown under Integrations → Forward email. Forward a customer email, or a notification from Indie Hackers, LinkedIn, X, Reddit, Product Hunt or YouTube, from your account's email. Tether saves it with the person attached, matches it to your pain points, and replies with what it saved. A Gmail filter that forwards automatically works too.
Which AI assistants work with Tether?
Claude, ChatGPT (Business, Enterprise or Edu; read-only on Pro), Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, and any other client that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth. The server URL is https://www.usetether.io/sse/mcp. Step-by-step instructions are on the setup page.
Why use Tether instead of pasting feedback into Claude or ChatGPT?
A chat forgets: you load in feedback, ask questions until the context fills up, then start over. Tether keeps every call and conversation as a lasting product discovery memory, already matched to pain points, and the same memory answers in Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code. Every pain point also links to the exact quotes behind it and who said them, so you can trace any conclusion back to the customer.
Do I need an AI assistant to use Tether?
It's the main way to ask Tether questions, but not the only way in. Forwarded email, Slack, GitHub and the Chrome extension bring feedback in on their own, and Tether matches it to pain points without an assistant.
What is a pain point in Tether?
A problem or unmet need a customer has, never a solution or a feature request. Each pain point keeps the quotes behind it and who said them, is ranked by how much feedback backs it, has a coverage you set (want to address, painful workaround or won't address), and shows how addressed it is once a fix linked to it ships.
How does the GitHub integration work?
Install Tether's GitHub App on the repositories you choose and turn on watching pull requests or merges. Each pull request is matched to the pain points it addresses and recorded as a solution, and Tether can comment on the PR with how many customers asked for it.
Does Tether train AI models on my data?
No. Your feedback is used to run Tether for you and nothing else. We don't sell it, advertise with it, or use it to train AI models.
Can I delete my data?
Yes. Email hello@usetether.io and we'll delete your account and everything in it.
How is Tether different from Dovetail, Canny or Productboard?
Those are built for product and research teams. Tether is built for a founder working alone or with a small team: it pulls feedback from where indie products hear it (calls, email and forwards, Slack, Indie Hackers, Product Hunt, X, Bluesky, any web page), keeps who said what, and answers inside the AI assistant you already use. There's a short comparison page for each.
